Careers Guidance

Pathways and career education is an integral part of the Avila journey. At Avila we view pathways and career education as:

A lifelong process of managing learning, work, leisure and transitions in order to move towards a personally determined and evolving future.

(CICA, 2007)

Furthermore, the Australian Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) defined career education as:

The development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences that will assist students to make informed decisions about their study and/or work options and enable effective participation in working life

Career education encompasses:

  • Learning about the world of work, its changing nature, the general expectations of employers, and the demands of the workplace
  • Developing self-awareness in relation to interests, abilities, competencies and values
  • Being aware and understanding of occupational information and career pathways
  • Developing skills in decision-making which can be applied to career choices
  • Acquiring the skills necessary to implement the career decisions made. (MCEETYA Career Education Taskforce, 1998)

Wherever possible, the Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework is used to direct activities and curriculum.
