Public Speaking and Debating

Avila runs a comprehensive Public Speaking and Debating program. Students from all levels participate and it provides them with a valuable lifelong skill.

There is a Debating competition within the college that prepares the junior students for the Debaters Association of Victoria competition. At senior level, we have nearly 20 teams that compete for Avila in the Wesley Zone. We quite often finish and go through to the playoffs and finals. Our Year 7 and 8 teams are often undefeated in that competition.

Public Speaking

Some Avila students have been awarded the prestigious Swannie Award, which is for the best individual debater in her grade in the Region. We have also been grand finalists in the Junior British Parliamentary Debating Competition.

Avila competes in all of the major Public Speaking Competitions, including the Plain English Competition in which the college has won the regional final. A highlight is the Lions Youth and the Year Competition in which Avila students have been winners of the Monash competition. Rotary are also providers of opportunities for Public Speakers through the Model United Nations Competition, MUNA, with Avila students representing Victoria at the final in Camberra on occasions. We regularly have finalists in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition and the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition. The students are prepared for those external competitions through a lively Public Speaker of the Year Competition at each year level, as well as fun activities like the staff versus student debate and the Avila Comedy Festival. Avila girls know speaking is fun.
