Towards a Better Future

At Avila College we acknowledge traditional custodians of this land, the Wurundjeri people, and pay our respects to the elders both past and present for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture, and the hopes of Aboriginal Australia.  We remember that under the concrete and asphalt this land was, and always will be, Aboriginal land, another’s dreaming.  We make this statement believing that we can walk together to a better future because Avila works for Reconciliation.

As a FIRE (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) Carrier school, Avila College has actively worked towards and promoted Reconciliation for many years.

In 2017, the Avila Reconciliation Group celebrated 20 years since it was established in 1997 through the passion of students to develop meaningful, enduring relationships with Aboriginal people and support Aboriginal people in their work for recognition and rights.

The ‘REC’ group as it is affectionately known meets weekly to learn about Aboriginal cultures and spiritualities, foster an understanding of the issues surrounding Reconciliation and of our true history as Australians, raise awareness of Reconciliation in the College community, work with local groups and raise funds for organisations working for Reconciliation.

Avila College’s commitment to Reconciliation is lived out by acknowledging the Land, involvement in the Message Stick program and continued support of NAIDOC Week, Michael Long’s “The Long Walk” and Close the Gap campaign. We are committed to the acceptance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
