What do you enjoy most about your role?
There are so many things I enjoy about my role! I love how varied my days can be. Particularly in teaching science I have the opportunity to be creative and explore an array of different ideas and concepts that help my students understand the world they live in. I love working with students and watching them learn and develop over their years at Avila.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Usually I arrive at work around 7.30 in the morning. I’ll ensure my classes are all organised and that I’m aware of what’s going on in the school that day. I’ll have a quick coffee and then I’ll be teaching for most of the day! Often you will find me doing practical work with my VCE Chemistry class, or working in small groups within my junior Maths class. At lunchtime I like to sit down in the AgHort garden and enjoy a bit of sun.
The most rewarding aspect of working at Avila?
I love being able to watch the students flourish through all of the opportunities we have within the school. In teaching Maths and Science I work closely with students with an interest in STEM and I enjoy being able to encourage their curiosity and allow them to develop their ideas. As there are so many opportunities at Avila, I am able to see the students that are interested in sports, music and the arts be able to excel as well. I have attended many events such as camps, creative arts and special events that Avila offers and it is amazing seeing our students have the opportunity to excel in their different areas of interest.
Why did you choose to work in Catholic education?
Within the Catholic school environment, the core values underpin all aspects of the student’s learning. It is important to me as an educator that my students are not learning exclusively about their subject areas, but also how to become good people and to be involved in their community. Within Catholic education, there are opportunities for the students to be involved in community service, and at Avila the homeroom/LAVP program allows discussion and the ability to connect with the students about social issues that are important and relevant to them.
What makes Avila College a great learning community?
Avila College has so many opportunities for students to have their voices heard and to pursue any of their interests. Each department has such wonderful teachers and runs many activities that the students can choose to be a part of, and it is an inclusive and engaging community. There is opportunity for leadership in each year level, and within this the students have an active role in the school community.
